How Many Days Until Christmas?

Dates and rules last checked October 23, 2026.

Christmas is on December 25 every year, and this countdown reads your device clock to show how many days are left.

Set from your device. Change it to count in another zone.

Reading your clock...

How we got this (example: today December 1, 2026 in UTC, counting to Christmas)

  1. Say today is Tuesday, December 1, 2026 in the UTC time zone. Once the page reads your device clock, your own date and time zone replace this example.
  2. 5 U.S.C. 6103 lists Christmas Day as a U.S. legal public holiday on December 25. (5 U.S.C. 6103)
  3. The next one is still ahead: Friday, December 25, 2026.
  4. Count the calendar days from today's date to Christmas: Dec 25, 2026 − Dec 1, 2026 = 24 days
  5. Sleeps are the nights before the day, so they are the same number: 24 sleeps.

The idea behind it: A countdown is one subtraction of calendar dates: the target date minus today's date where you are. It changes once a day, at your own midnight, which is why someone in another time zone can be a day ahead of or behind you.

Days, sleeps, hours and seconds to December 25 in your own time zone, plus the weekends and paydays left. Change the menu to count down to another holiday or any date.

How the count works

The big number is calendar days: how many midnights separate today's date from December 25 in your time zone. That is the answer people expect. On the morning of December 24 it says 1 day, and on December 25 it says it is Christmas for the whole local day, not just at midnight. On December 26 it rolls to next year and counts to the next December 25.

The clock underneath is stricter. It counts the exact hours, minutes and seconds to the moment December 25 begins where you are, so its day box runs one lower than the headline until the final 24 hours. Clocks that go back or forward for daylight saving are handled by counting to the real start of the day, so a 23-hour or 25-hour day in between does not throw the count off.

Sleeps equal days because a sleep is a night and each day before Christmas ends with one. Weekends are the Saturdays between today and the day (today counts if it is a Saturday). Weekdays are Monday to Friday days in the same span; bank and company holidays are not removed, so use it as an upper bound for working days.

What day of the week is Christmas?

The weekday moves forward one day each year and two after a leap year, which is why it cycles in a pattern rather than repeating every year. This table is calculated, not copied from a calendar.

YearDecember 25 falls onLeap year?
2026FridayNo
2027SaturdayNo
2028MondayYes
2029TuesdayNo
2030WednesdayNo
2031ThursdayNo
2032SaturdayYes

If you work for the U.S. federal government, the year matters: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, 5 U.S.C. 6103 makes the Friday before the legal public holiday for most employees. In this table that applies to 2027 and 2032. Private employers set their own rules, so check your own calendar.

Why count weekends and paydays

"Days left" is a mood; weekends and paydays are a plan. A dozen weekends sounds roomy at the start of October and is gone by the time the lights go up, and most gift budgets come out of paychecks. If you are paid every two weeks, enter any one payday and the page lists how many are left before the 25th, and warns when the last one lands on Christmas Day itself.

Last days to mail for Christmas 2026 (USPS)

For gifts going by mail, the deadline that matters comes before December 25. The U.S. Postal Service's recommended send-by dates for delivery before Christmas within the lower 48 states are below; subtract the last column from the countdown above to see how many days you have left to ship.

ServiceSend byDays before Christmas
USPS Ground AdvantageThursday, December 178
First-Class Mail (cards and letters)Thursday, December 178
Priority MailFriday, December 187
Priority Mail ExpressSaturday, December 196

Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories share the First-Class, Priority and Priority Express dates, but USPS gives Ground Advantage to and from those places a 10-day-or-longer service expectation instead of a date, so check your ZIP Codes in its service lookup. These are recommendations, not guarantees, and they are not the dates for military or international mail (USPS, September 22, 2026).

Counting to other holidays and dates

The menu covers New Year's Day and Eve, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's and Father's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Their dates come from the rule behind each one (Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Easter uses the standard Gregorian calculation), so they stay right in future years. For anything else, use "Any date I choose".

Questions people ask

How many days until Christmas?

The counter above works it out from your device clock: the number of calendar days from today to December 25. On January 1 of a regular year it is 358 days; in a leap year it is 359, because February has an extra day. On December 24 it is 1 day, and on December 25 it is Christmas.

How many sleeps until Christmas?

The same number as the days. A sleep is a night, and each day before Christmas ends with one: on December 24 there is 1 sleep left, and after that sleep it is Christmas morning.

Does the count include today or Christmas Day?

Neither. It counts the days between today and December 25. If today is December 20, the answer is 5: the five days after today, up to and including the 25th. On December 25 the count is 0 and the page says it is Christmas.

Why does the clock show one fewer day than the big number?

The big number counts calendar days, the way people say it: on the afternoon of December 24, Christmas is 1 day away. The clock counts the exact time left until midnight at the start of December 25. That is less than a full day on December 24, so its day box reads 0 until the last 24 hours begin. Both are right; they answer slightly different questions.

What happens on December 26?

The page rolls over to next year. On December 26 it counts to the next December 25, which is 364 days away in most years and 365 when a February 29 falls in between (for example from December 26, 2027 to December 25, 2028).

Does my time zone matter?

Yes. A calendar date starts at different moments around the world, so Christmas morning arrives first in the far Pacific (the Line Islands of Kiribati are at UTC+14) and last at UTC-12. The page reads your device time zone and counts to midnight there. If you pick another zone in the menu, it counts to Christmas in that zone instead, which is handy for a relative on the other side of the world.

How many weeks until Christmas?

Divide the days by 7. With 50 days left, that is 7 weeks and 1 day. The page shows weekends instead, meaning the Saturdays left before the day, because that is what most people plan around.

How are paydays counted?

You enter any one payday, past or upcoming, and the page steps forward every 14 days (or every 7 if you pick weekly) from it. It counts paydays from today through December 25 and tells you if one lands on Christmas itself. It does not know about bank holidays or an employer that pays early, so treat it as a planning count, not your payroll calendar.

Can I count down to something other than Christmas?

Yes. Pick another holiday from the menu, or choose "Any date I choose" and enter a vacation, due date or birthday. Switch on "Repeats every year" for a birthday or anniversary, or leave it off for a one-time date. Holidays that follow the lunar calendar, such as Hanukkah, Diwali and Eid, are not in the list because their dates need astronomical tables; enter their date yourself with the custom option.

Does this page collect or store anything?

No. The count is worked out in your browser from your device clock. The dates you type, including your payday, are not sent anywhere and not remembered after you leave. There is no sign-up, sound or pop-up.
